What Your Child Will Learn:
What You'll Need:
manners chart, paper, pen
Explain The Manners Game.
Tell your child that you are going to play The Manners Game together. Each time they say a word or phrase on the manners chart, they get a point. They may earn extra points if they use the words with other people (at the store or a restaurant). Keep the chart on the fridge where your child can see it.
Earn extra points.
You might consider adding points for thoughtful actions—like holding a door for someone, looking people in the eye when speaking to them, or asking them about their day/work/job. Track how often your child uses their manners without being asked, and gently remind them if they forget. And, of course, give plenty of praise!
Don't forget to take photos!
Praise and reward.
When your child reaches a certain number of points (say 10), you can reward them with a treat or a dollar for their Saving or Spending envelope. Play it up when you hand them the cash by congratulating them. Then, repeat the process again and again to make the words and behavior stick.

We want kids to get to the place where they use good manners automatically—for it to be part of their behavior. By connecting cool rewards with good behavior, they learn that. They will want to do it again and again. The more they practice behavior like this, the more it will become a natural response to the people they interact with each day.
